Expressionist Portraits in Grade 6

After creating our complimentary collages we used colour to create an Expressionist portrait. The students had to read about the different moods associated with colour and then hi-light the emotions/moods that represented them. The one which was most important to them became their “base” colour. If it was blue for example, then the rest of the colour scheme had to be cool colours with a touch of warm for contrast. This is work in progress but have a look at what the students said on this video.

Martina Shapiro‘s stunning paintings. Their next step will be to paint a background in Monochromatic colours using a variety of paint techniques. Here is my sample:
