The grade 7 students have begun the second part of their sculpture task, a book sculpture. They are currently practising with magazines before they begin on actual books. We had some fabulous videos to watch:
The students had to follow along as they watched. Then they had to look at my Pinterest board: http://www.pinterest.com/rjardin/sculpture/ and were required to guess how those book sculptures were made. Some of the techniques were copied. Lastly the students had to try their own techniques from folding, rolling, tearing, to bending.
The students reflected upon the process and discussed what they personally thought made a “successful” book sculpture. Some said, simplicity, strong folds, design, repetition, rhythm, movement, variety and volume. It was an awesome start to this unit. I loved the enthusiasm of all my students.
