Last Thursday we had our first Mandala event through advisory. The grade 7s had been working so hard on their mandalas that I decided to put together a celebration exhibition. We had their personal mandalas, mobiles and umbrellas on display. I also had the projector going with their stop motions and photos demonstrating the complicated process they followed. This was such a successful unit I think it should become a tradition at SSIS for grade 7!
The hi-light of the event however was having Aadarsh’s mum, Vidya and her friend come in and demonstrate flour mandalas decorated with flowers as they do back home. It was so wonderful seeing how skilled and quick they were drawing with the rice flour. I loved how this is a current practice for festivals and celebrations in India which makes our mandala unit so authentic. The students were absolutely engrossed with the creation of those beautiful mandalas. I wish they could have stayed there forever. Maybe we need to create more in paint under the atrium! This was the first time I have ever asked a parent to participate in an exhibition and I loved it.
