The grade 7 class has been studying the Elements and Principles of art. They began the unit by watching a Powerpoint from Slideshare.

Afterwards they had to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding by creating two pages of digital resources for one element or principle. These were used as inspiration for their shoe designs.

For the next lesson I had booked laptops from the library but they were overbooked so I had to think quickly and came up with a fabulous idea which I would definitely repeat one day. I had the students check out ipads. They were required to walk all around the campus and take two photos of each element and principle. When we returned to class they uploaded their images onto Pages and then labeled and emailed the documents to me. This was supported with a quick presentation discussing why they took the shots that they did.

The students have been not only learning about the importance of elements and principles in an art work but also how to develop their ideas. They created three different designs and then put all their favourite elements and principles into a 4th design which will be their final colour plan. Each design had to show movement, texture or pattern, focal point, contrast, irregular shapes, complimentary colours and tints/tones.

They really are looking good so far. The next step will be to draw a person using foreshortening. Then grade 7 will be ready to start the final.
