Paper Sculpture and Tone in Grade 7

My new grade 7 class has been learning about tone in art. They are now very good at recognizing the changing values with in a drawing. They have all successfully completed a paper sculpture and are now drawing it with lamps set up so that they can see the tones more easily. Their first major piece will be a charcoal drawing, the second will be chalk.

This task has taught (or reinforced) paper manipulation, observational, drawing, and toning skills. The students also had to consider the view point, negative shapes and allow the shadows to be an important part of their piece. So far I am really happy with their drawings. Next class I am sure they will finish the first task, I can’t wait to see the results.
