Understanding Tone with Charcoal

The grade 7 students have been learning about tone. They have experimented with 2B and 4B pencils and are now trying to capture value with charcoal. They made these paper sculptures to work from so that they always drawing from observation. We set up lamps so that it was easier for the students to see the mid-tones. They are beginning to understand that tone not only creates variation and realism but also adds contrast to their work.

I have seen a huge improvement in their work. Well done grade 7!
