Abstract Animals

Now Grade 7 are studying Abstract Animals. This is a brilliant task for observational drawing and clarifying the elements and principles of art. Firstly the students had to practise drawing their animals from a photo. These drawings were then traced so that a variety of concepts could be created. We had to review the difference between shapes and patterns as many of the students were repeating their shapes which then created a pattern instead. I am thrilled with their progress because there has been a significant improvement with their drawing skills and they have demonstrated a good understanding of balance, rhythm and colour.

We talked about working with a dominant colour and then considering adding harmonious colours or purposely adding contrast. Now that the colour plans are complete the students are ready to begin their final pieces.

I honestly can’t wait to see the results.
