Star Students

In the past I chose “An Artist of the Week”.

Students loved this, but then it became just too hard to choose so I gave it a break for a few years. I am undecided whether to bring it back.

I do love that students are rewarded for engagement rather than “talent”. The certificates were printed and hung in the classroom, it was shared in the school announcements, and emailed to parents. The trouble was choosing 1 person from 5 classes each week. Just too hard.

I have kept this page on my blog though, because it is a fabulous reminder of the students and art created from the past. I’m not sure if it is something that needs to come back or not. Maybe, I’ll ask my students next year.

During Covid we did create art certificates for another purpose in Middle school. It was lovely seeing the art featured. Maybe, I could look into more options like this, where more students can be celebrated at once. I would hate for someone to feel left out.

This is exactly why I have mixed feelings about art competitions too. Not enough students can be acknowledged for their hard work, courage and creativity.

If you have demonstrated strong skills, presented your work neatly and tried your absolute best, then you too have a chance of winning this award. The winner is announced in the daily notices and they receive a gorgeous certificate. Keep up the incredible work.
